Combined Clubs Criterium   - 19th November 2011

Finally, the first race to be held on the new Toowoomba Criterium Circuit. Everyone was super keen to have a race on the new circuit to see what it was really like. The sun was shining, spectators were aplenty, it was the perfect afternoon to be on the bike.

Mt Tyson Handicap  - 16th October 2011

After the wild weather of the past couple of days, we were greeted with dense fog on the drive out to Mt Tyson. There was water over the road in several spots which may be a cause of concern if it was over the course proper as well. After an early inspection it was deemed safe enough to race with one section having mud shovelled off the road and a nearby patch still having water trickle over the road.

With only 23 riders across the four grades it was decided to run a handicapped event of two laps of the 25km course. After Phil's last effort at Boodua and a couple of other results recently, he was definitely not going to get any extra time today. He and two other riders were started with another five following at 5 minutes. The main bunch of 14 went at 11 minutes while Seb was set off at 11:30 minutes.

After the first lap Phil and Ryan had a lead of close to three minutes over the following five. With the next bunch through at 4 mins and then another bunch of about four riders at 4:40min , it looked like they be able to hold their lead for a while longer. There were a few stragellers coming in after the first lap with some pullling out then but some continued on.

The finish was looking like a bunch sprint with plenty of riders jockeying for postion coming down the main straight. In the end Seb Scott was able to hold out Daniel Devlin(2nd) and Peter York (3rd) to take the win. It was a blanket finish with fourth (Trent West) and fifth (Matt Haswell) just behind.

Congratulations to all the riders for coming out of town for the race and for keeping it safe on a trying course. Thank you to Jon for commissiaring again. Thanks to Damien and Highmy for bringing out the trailer and setting the signs up. Thanks to Moey Jr. and Dinah from Highfields for driving the follow vehicle.

Blanchview Individual Time Trial  - 18th September 2011

Sixteen riders fronted for what can only be described as the toughest race on the local calendar. Conditions were warm with a southerly breeze creating a headwind for the riders on the open part of the course. The course is only 9.6km long but features a lot of short sharp bumps finishing with the long drag at between 18 and 22%.

Thank you to the riders who attended as this is why we hold races. Thank you to the Toowoomba Tri Club for the use of your timing devices this year, very much appreciated.

Boodua Handicap 11th September 2011

Thankfully the cyclonic wind from Saturday was replaced with just a stiff breeze from the South. Temperatures were still cold at the start but soon warmed up once racing started. Being a handicap race there will always be riders trying to bribe the handicappers for a better start time but it didn't seem to work with Jon and Brad, (personally their prices were too high).

Phil Leyden and Harvey Silk were given 32 minutes to make it to the finish before the scratch riders. Twelve minutes from scratch saw Adam, Errol, Tori and Charlie start, 7 minutes from scratch had a larger group of eight riders start and from scratch 9 riders started.

After the first lap the scratch riders were still 4 minutes behind the group in front with Phil and Harvey still holding their own with a handy lead. During the second lap riders started to pop from all the groups as the pace was holding steady even though the wind was increasing.

It was just after the second last corner on the final lap when the scratch riders caught the groups in front and as they went past a few of the front riders were able to jump on. In the end Phil had an easy run into the line, finishing ahead of the bunch sprint by a couple of minutes. Seb was able to out sprint Phil Muller for second with Rob Free fourth and Graham Day fifth. All the other riders were on the main straight by that time so it turned out to be good handicapping by Jon and Brad.

Phil finished with a time of 2hrs 8min but Seb finished with the fastest time of 1 hour 37min.

Thank you to the commissaries, TCC for putting out all the signage, the ladies on the rego table and to the riders for attending.

Thank you to Seb as well for donating his winnings to the Platinum Health Junior Development Squad.

Individual Time Trial 20km - 14th August 2011

Once again there were plenty of aero helmets and disc wheels present and these definitely showed in the times (besides the fact the riders are good time triallists as well).  The riders had a tailwind for the first 10km to the turn around point but then were faced with a very strong easterly on the way home. This and the fact its uphill definitely brings the average speed down compared to the first 10km.

The times from today will be used to formulate handicaps for the upcoming Handicap Race in September. The course is yet to be confirmed so stay tuned.

Goombungee Road Race - 17th July 2011

by Jon Lindley

A small but classy field attended. A nice day for racing after the poor weather the day before. Foggy drizzle in Toowoomba but fine in Goombungee didn’t help. Thanks to all the helpers, Rodney Boyce, Michelle Lingard, Bob Free, Lou Gordon, Cara, Sarah and Jessica Lindley for braving the cold. Special thanks to Doug Graham for getting up early and putting up and pulling down the signage as well as driving a lead vehicle. We really appreciate your help.

D Grade (including 1 junior Ben Lingard)

Goombungee Road Race - 5th June 2011

There was some controversy over the weekend with a few riders who usually race A grade dropping back to B grade claiming a lack of fitness for the reason why, although they were all present in the break. Justin wished he started in B grade as well as he was dropped after only a lap and half in the A grade race.

There has been some late mail with Kent Bauer claiming 4th position ahead of Jacob and Campbell. Will have to check with the commissiares to see if there has been an error on their behalf. It was down to a split decision.

Boodua Road Race - 22nd May 2011

It looked like it was going to be miserable conditions to race in, waking up to light rain in Toowoomba although it was not the case out at Boodua with only slight cloud cover. The wind did pick up as the morning wore on but not enough to make it unbearable.

Dave Silk from TCC has provided the race report so click here to download.

Thank you to Jon Lindley for battling to get the permits and to the volunteers who manned corners and drove vehicles.

Next Road race is at Goombungee on the 5th June. See you there.

Team Time Trial Handicap - 10th April 2011

It was an eventful day with two riders coming down, both from touching wheels. We hold the Team Time Trials so as to give new riders an introduction into racing without the pressure of too many riders in close proximity or hard circuits. Sometimes it just happens. Hopefully they have learnt what happened and how to avoid it next time.

Wyreema Individual Time Trial - 9th April 2011

Huge numbers for the first ITT of the year. Riders were greeted with a cool morning but thankfully not much wind. This definitely showed in the times, with them being much faster than last year.

Congrats to Highfields Rollers in running their first event. Click here for full results.

Toowoomba Criterium Championships RD 4 - 26th March 2011

With the series still up for grabs across most of the grades, it was going to be an ineteresting afternoon of racing.

Caleb Genrich had an unbeatable lead in the Juniors division but still made sure it was a series clean sweep by taking his fourth straight win.

D Grade was going to be close with both Lindsay Tierney and Harvey Silk battling it out to see who would get enough points to take the series. Lindsay stuck to the plan that has worked for him over the previous races by not being too close to the front. New rider Ben Mackie tried to drive the pace throughout the race but in the end it was Matthew Locker who attacked on the bell lap that took the win.

The C Grade series also came down to this race. Matthew Sander and Dan Jauncy had the chance to secure the series with a win in this race. Matthew was able to take his third straight win and the series with Dan finishing second.

B Grade was going to be the race to watch this afternoon with Dave Silk, Aaron Haycock and Andy Gordon battling it out for the series win. It was always going to be a tentative race after the crash in the third round. A break formed early with Aaron Haycock from TLD in it which left Andy Gordon in the chase group with Dave Silk and the remaining 4 TLD riders.  It seemed like this was a planned move from the start as it was left up to Andy to head the chase group and with no help forthcoming from the TLD riders it might have meant Andy could lose the series.

With some good work from Andy and Peter Mouatt they were able to bridge the gap and drop the TLD riders. More work from Peter Mouatt in the closing laps enabled Andy to take the win and the series.

With Darren and Hayden having to fly to the U.S. for the Redlands Classic instead of the final race of the Toowoomba series, all the A Grade riders breathed a sigh of relief. There were plenty of solo attacks throughout the race. Early in the race a group of four made a decisive break that looked like it could have succeeded but with a good drive from Jacob Mouatt it was short lived. In the end it came down to another bunch sprint and with the current Qld Sprint Champ there, Peter Bennett, it was a foregone conclusion.

Toowoomba Criterium Championships RD 3 - 12th March 2011

Windy conditions greeted the riders today so it was unlikely that any solo break would succeed. Some notable names were missing from the line up today and this could only be contributed to Crestmead tomorrow or softness.

The Juniors series seems to be all wrapped up with Caleb Genrich again dominating the race to take his fourth successive win for the year. Tom Haswell who after almost not starting due to busting a cleat just before the race, borrowed some shoes and pedals and managed to take second.

After hiding at the back for most of the race, Lindsay Tierney secured the win for D Grade. New rider Ben Mackie showed he has the legs by taking second after doing quite a bit of work on the front and Lachlan Head came out of retirement for third.

C Grade had some fast laps in the middle of the race but when it came down to two laps to go the pace seemed quite pedestrian with everyone waiting for someone else to come to the front. The bell lap spurred things along and Matthew Sander took first for the second race in a row. Peter Pellicaan learned from his lessons last race and managed to place third, missing out on second to another new rider, Malcolm Krahenbring.

TCC had the numbers in the B Grade  race with only two Bikeline Racing and one HRCC rider in the field. Noticably absent was Dave 'Cav' Silk from Team TLD. Simon Genrich attempted a solo break early in the race but the wind proved too much and he was reeled back in. At that moment Andy Gordon attacked but it was shortlived. Ross Harrington retired midway with a puncture. Rod Lingard also attempted a break late in the race but with Andy Gordon stuck to his wheel he was going nowhere.

Coming onto the finishing straight the bunch looked like they were jostling for position to stay out of the wind and as they came past the finishline for the bell lap there was a touch of wheels and five riders hit the deck. Ashley Seawright received the most damage and was taken to hospital for checking over. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

A Grade was missing a few riders this week but it also saw Liam McCarthy from Lifecycle CC make an appearance. As usual the pace was on from the start and Darren, Hayden and Pete Collins made a break. Liam and Jacob had trouble hanging onto the rest of the field and found themselves out the back and both retired early.  Hayden and Darren started working Pete over by taking turns to attack and in the end it proved too much. The boys rode away to decide who was going to take first. In the end they probably had time to do rock, paper, scissors to work it out.

A big thank you to Brad Caporn, Glenn Trussell, Greg Vincent, Michelle Lingard, Ross Harrington and Stewart Hansen for helping on the day.

Toowoomba Criterium Championships RD 2 - 26th February 2011

Numbers were slightly down from the last race with 41 riders signing up on Saturday. Conditions were perfect for the whole afternoon.

Juniors was won by Caleb Genrich who managed to outlast Will Jauncey in the sprint for the line.

D Grade included two ladies in the field and they made sure that the men had to work for it. Tina MCotter was always near the front setting the pace and showed great speed through the bottom corner. In the end Lindsay Tierney took the win after keeping himself off the front for the last couple of laps.

C Grade saw Peter Pellicaan go solo from lap number two. After a couple of laps stretching the legs he decided to fall back to the bunch. It seemed all the riders were doing their bit to keep the pace going with constant changes to the front. Once again it came down to who went into the bottom corner best. This time it was Nathan Sander followed by Corey Wolski and Doug Harris.

B Grade had a big field with any number of potential winners. Old favourites like Ross Harrington and Phil Muller from TCC were there as well as Peter Mouatt and Jon Lindley. It was Team TLD who did the dictating with them frequently near the front. John Selman and Aaron Haycock attacked with a few laps to go only to see John tire and be rounded up by the bunch. Aaron rode well to go solo for nearly two laps and take the win easily. Dave 'Cav' Silk made it one two for Team TLD.

A Grade was always going to be hard with only 6 riders starting. It quickly turned into a smash up when Hayden Brooks and Gary K. lifted the pace. Peter Collins managed to go with and hold on for a while. It's not often you see Pete's face show pain. When Hayden said to Gary they should try and lap the other riders twice, even Gary knew it was time to just ride his own race to the finish. Thankfully Darren wasn't there as well.

Toowoomba Criterium Championships RD 1- 29th January 2011

Big numbers for the first of the series with some spirited racing across all the grades.

A Grade saw Darren Rolfe and Hayden Brooks from Fly V playing with the field by attacking and then coming back to the peloton. There plans to get reigning champ Campbell Kerr across the line was soon evident. Peter Bennett surprised them by jumping early and taking the win by a tyre.

B Grade was marred by a crash on the bottom corner. This took out a few of the players. Sam Beck was back and in form to outsprint Dave 'Cav' Silk. This grade could be the one to watch as it could be won by any number of riders.

C Grade saw a couple of riders from last weeks D grade make the jump including Dan Jauncey. It seems he was even too strong for C Grade by taking another win. Cagey Mark Vainikka might be worth a look for overall as he seems to be racing well and taking 3rd.

D Grade has a good mix of juniors and seniors. This week it was the juniors, Gabby Vainikka and Harvey Silk, who took the win. After some deliberation the commissiares decided to call it a draw as it was too close to call. Even veteran John Osborne scraped in for some points by taking 5th.

Juniors is being decided by the older boys with Caleb Genrich taking first again after his win at the last weeks warm up race.

Toowoomba Track Day - 17th January 2011

Overwhelming numbers turned out for the first Toowoomba Track Day. It was great to see such numbers keen to get on the velodrome. This will only be the start of such events and hopefully we will be seeing a return to the good old days of Track Cycling. It was definitely a blast.

Check out some of the photos from the day.

The first event was the Individual Flying 200m and with the 2011 State Elite Champion on the track the crowd were very keen to see how fast is fast.
